York Trailblazers

Join us on a magical adventure along our stunning sculpture trail, which will bring a new energy to the heart of our city. This summer, in 2024, you can explore a dazzling collection of Tansy Beetle sculptures, each one a beautiful tribute to the incredible people who have shaped the history of York.

The endangered Tansy Beetle, known as "The Jewel of York", has been selected as the symbol of the Trailblazer project. This choice reflects the beetle's unique connection to York, as it thrives in its riverside habitat along the River Ouse. The Tansy Beetle's resilience mirrors the spirit of York's trailblazers, who have made a lasting impact on the local, national, and global stage.

Through the collaborative effort of 40 community groups and over 1000 schoolchildren, this project has come to life. Together, they have taken part in 150 workshops to uncover the inspiring stories of the trailblazers. While some of the sculptures may only be on display for a limited time, the Tansy Beetle and a digital record of the artwork will ensure that York's Trailblazers are celebrated for years to come.
